FluxForward Album der Woche: Manchester Orchestra – A Black Mile To The Surface

We always talked about a futuristic folk sound

1876 entdeckte man in der Region um Lead in South Dakota eine Goldmine. Genau genommen wurde die Stadt erst deshalb gegründet. Andy Hull – Gründer, Frontmann und Sänger von Manchester Orchestra – vertiefte sich im Zuge der Arbeiten an „A Black Mile To The Surface“ genauer in dessen Historie. Sie bildete das Rückgrat des fünften Albums:

A lot of the records mythology takes place in that town. There are a lot of cahracters that are connected throughout the album, that take place there. I did a lot of research about that city and so it’s sort of a wink or a node to sort of what’s going on underneath the surface of the album.

„A Black Mile To The Surface“ ist ihr bislang facettenreichstes Werk. Geprägt durch die Arbeit am Score zu „Swiss Army Man“ bei dem Andy Hull und Robert McDowell die Prämisse bekamen, nichts außer ihre Stimme als Instrument einzusetzen, stand auf der neuen Platte vor allem auch die Stimme im Vordergrund.

This was a record where Robert and I made a concious decision to put my voice as the main thing that you are hearing and letting that be just as an important character as the guitars were on „Cope“.

Also weniger Gitarren, dafür mehr Synthies, ein stärkerer Fokus auf die Vocals und alles mündete in einem Soundentwurf der, ähnlich wie Bon Ivers „22“, A Million, nach neuen Wegen in einem eingestaubten Genre sucht.

On this we knew we kind of had to find a new voice for the score of the album, for the music of the album. We always talked about a futuristic folk sound and so it was about combining these classic progressions and finger picking patterns and then messing up synth sounds
