Jia & Turn Around Bright Eyes | Radio Arty

Diese Woche sind die chinesische Künstlerin Jia sowie Lisa Wassmann und Valquire Veljkovic, die von der Ausstellung Turn Around Bright Eyes at Berghain berichten Gäste bei Radio Arty.

The Chinese Version

The work of Jia (*1979, Beijing) comprises painting as well as photography and performance. In her painting series, The Chinese Version, Jia renders industrial typography with painterly methods. On large format canvases, she hand paints Chinese characters using always the same typeface which was designed shortly after printing presses came to use in China and Japan and which “evokes the mechanization of products ‘perfectly’ made by machine”.

The cultural atrocity of Chinese character simplification that began in the 1950’s, remains by force of law in the People’s Republic of China through the present day. The Simplification Program degraded not only aesthetic properties of Chinese characters, but also hindered literacy in all but recent official texts. The Simplification Program had two aspects: a haphazard formal reduction of the number strokes in Chinese characters, and the elimination of approximately two thirds of characters from the lexicon of those allowed for publication.

Turn Around Bright Eyes

Turn around Bright Eyes – Digital art meets music im Berghain. Your Mom’s feiert dort das Zusammentreffen von Digital Art und Musik. Der Abend vereint von Technologie inspirierte und in Berlin geborene Kunst mit Live-Musik: 15 KünstlerInnen präsentieren ihre Arbeiten als audio- visuelles Erlebnis, daneben spielen der Franzose Koudlam, CDM-Gründer Peter Kirn und technoschamanische Duo Hyenaz auf der Konzertbühne.

Der Berliner Künstler Valquire Veljkovic und Fotografin Lisa Wassmann erzählen bei Radio Arty was über den künstlerischen Teil. So wie Musik ihre eigene Welt erschafft, in welcher Zeit bedeutungslos ist und ein Club zu einem Raumschiff werden kann, so hat Lisa Clubfotos ausgewählt, die ebenso weit entfernt von Raum und Zeit wirken, wie die Künstler, die diese Momente erschufen. Valquires Kunst ist sein simples und stark geschmücktes Statement, mit einer immer wiederkehrenden Ästhetik aus gespiegelten Mustern und einer bestimmten dunklen Helligkeit, diesmal mit Video.
